Pekoe (PEK)

Pekoe (PEK) is a grade of black tea that falls under the tea grading system, used primarily for orthodox teas (teas processed using traditional methods). The term "Pekoe" specifically refers to the size and quality of the tea leaves and is positioned slightly below Orange Pekoe (OP) in the grading hierarchy.

Key Characteristics of Pekoe (PEK):

  1. Grade Type:

    • Pekoe represents whole-leaf tea, but the leaves are generally smaller and less refined compared to higher grades like OP (Orange Pekoe) or OPA (Orange Pekoe A).
  2. Leaf Appearance:

    • Shorter, tightly rolled leaves with a slightly coarse texture.
    • The leaves are often from the second or third leaf below the bud, making them smaller and less delicate than those used in OP grades.
  3. Flavor Profile:

    • Pekoe tea has a stronger and more robust flavor compared to the lighter and more aromatic OP or OPA grades.
    • It may have a hint of astringency, making it suitable for a brisk cup of tea.
    • The flavor is less nuanced and more straightforward, making it popular for blends.
  4. Brewing & Usage:

    • Pekoe teas are well-suited for milk teas or blends that require a bold, strong base.
    • They are also commonly used in traditional South Asian chai preparations.
  5. Production Regions:

    • Produced in many tea-growing regions, including India, Sri Lanka, China, and Kenya.
    • In Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Pekoe teas are often grown at mid to low elevations, resulting in a rich, full-bodied character.
